Utility Solutions, Inc. (USI) has just introduced another load break tool specifically designed for 38 kV systems. The new 38 kV – 300 AMP portable load break and pick-up tool is the latest version in their popular BREAK-SAFE® line. This version introduces continued improvements in the product line and represents the most advanced BREAK-SAFE® in their twenty year history.
Many utility customers with 38 kV systems have limited options for portable load break and load pick-up tools. The BREAK-SAFE® is a popular and proven method for hotline workers to safely install and manage temporary switching capabilities at the job site. Jon Spencer, engineer at USI lead the develop team for this model. “Our 46 kV unit was one of the only options for clients in this situation and they were limited to a 200 AMP rated tool”, he says. “We needed to reach 300 AMPS with this 38 kV version, and that required looking at every aspect of the design”.
Since its introduction in the late 1990’s, the BREAK-SAFE® has become an industry standard. Hotline crews can safely isolate work areas in between installed switches with a lightweight and portable device. USI now has 5 models including 15, 27, 38 and 46 kV.
“Our current platform has a 300 AMP load break, load pick-up and continuous current duty rating”, Spencer goes on to say, “our breakthrough was successfully reaching the 38 kV voltage rating. We believe this will give line workers another option for choosing the right tool for the job.”
The engineering team at USI made the 38 kV version as small and light as possible. “Ergonomics is an important factor for lineman”, says Aaron Wood, Marketing/R&D for USI. “We were able to keep this tool around 8 lbs. which is half the weight of most temporary cutouts.” The 38 kV tool is 33″ long and is available in both a floating head model for glove work and a duckbill head for hot sticks.
USI is targeting utilities and contractors who service 38 kV overhead distribution systems.
